AAOS and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association joined a coalition of trauma, emergency medicine, and injury-prevention organizations in supporting Rep. Josh Gottheimer’s (D-NJ) Safety and Funding for E-Bikes (SAFE) Ride Act (H.R. 5265). The bill would create a Department of Transportation (DOT) grant program to help states strengthen e-bike safety programs, including enforcement of safety and helmet laws, accident data collection, and support for local law enforcement and public education. These efforts aim to reduce serious e-bike injuries — particularly among children and adolescents. It also directs DOT to set national standards recommending helmet use for riders aged 18 years or younger and to develop publicly available safety curricula.
